Martin Roca De Torres, outlasted the 529 runners

The 2017 World Series of Poker (WSOP )Europe €10,350 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event Champion is Marti Roca De Torres.

The highlight tournament of the WSOP Europe received a total of 529 entries and in the end, it was Former economics teacher turned poker professional, De Torres who emerged victorious, capturing his first WSOP gold bracelet and the top prize of €1,115,207 ($1,301,815 USD). The 36-year old Spanish poker-players, De Torres defeated Italy’s Gianluca Speranza after a grueling heads-up battle that lasted close to four hours. For Sperenza it was another heartbreak after a similar runner-up finish in 2011 in a €1,000 Event of the WSOP Europe in Cannes. For his efforts Sperenza earned a windfall of €689,246.

The event came across famous personalities. Former tennis star and poker enthusiast Evgeny Kafelnikov finished in 45th place for €20,175, David Peters (44th place – €20,175), WSOP Bracelet winner Mike Leah (39th place – €22,895), Maria Lampropulos (33rd place – €22,895), WSOP bracelet winner Anthony Zinno (24th place – €31,377), Rainer Kempe (22nd place – €31,377), and two-time WSOP Bracelet winner Kristen Bicknell (18th place – €31,377).

Only 12 players remained on Day 5 and among those was also defending champion Kevin MacPhee who won a dramatic flip against Marc MacDonnell to see the Irishman bow out in 11th place for €58,455. However, MacPhee’s fate changed soon after when his pocket kings didn’t hold against the combo draw of Maria Ho and he had to settle for 10th place and €74,737.

Gianluca Speranza defeated in head-up battle

The official eight-handed final table was formed after online qualifier. The eliminations continued with Maria Ho, dominanat for much of the lead up to the final table having to settle for 6th place. The eliminations brought the play to the final showdown between Speranza and MDe Torresartin. Speranza began with the chip lead, but the tides turned in favour of De Torres toward the end of the marathon session. The final hand came down to a coin flip, as the pair were nearly equal in chips when Roca De Torres shoved with    and Speranza called with   . The flop brought    to give Speranza a pair of aces but the  on the turn changed the scenario giving De Torres a set of fives with a 9 on the river completing his full house.

De Torres’ story is an inspiring one, as the Spaniard quit his job as an economics teacher a few years ago to concentrate on his passion – poker. He won his entry through a €220 satellite on 888poker before turning that into astonishing €1,115,207.
