GPL For India

GPL was an initiative by the Mediarex Sports & Entertainment taken up in 2016 to realise the dream of the founder, Alex Dreyfus, of providing the poker lovers with the sense of competition in the game.

In India, the GPL sojourn began with a strategic collaboration with Kwan Entertainment in December 2017 and on April 20, 2018 PokerStars stepped onto the GPL India frame as its exclusive skill game partner for the Season 1 of the League.

“We understand that the Indian poker market is only just emerging, but at the same time, we believe in the game’s future – and the future of competitive gaming as a whole – when it comes to the Indian market. This the right moment to establish our brand and our expertise locally and help this entertainment sector take root throughout India.”, GPL founder Alex Dreyfus stated, on GPL’s India chapter.

“Our global infrastructure to operate competitive gaming Leagues, including TV studios, online platforms, legitimacy, relationship with all poker operators and best players in the world, is a solid framework that we plan to leverage for the India poker community. Our ability to innovate and bring disruption, by promoting poker as a skill game and team-based competition is unique. We want the whole Indian poker community to embrace GPL India. We’re excited to make this happen,” he added.

GPL India: The Stages

Stage 1- online weekly qualification:

MTT qualification events will be run on PokerStars once in a week, for seven weeks, starting from end of June to beginning of August. The Qualifiers are based on the “free-roll satellite” format divided thematically across the six GPL India teams.  Finally, at the end of each week, the top 10 finishers will feature in the “Team Finals”. Thus, 6 teams with 10 players each, will reach Delhi to attend the GPL India Bootcamp.

Stage 2: Bootcamp, Draft Day & Regular Season

After the team finalisation, the bootcamp will be held on September 8. The 60 players from 10 different teams will randomly compete against each other in Sit and Go tournament.

Prior to the SNG tournament, the following stages ensue:

  • Initial ‘Quickfire’ interviews – Judges, a mix of local celebrities, GPL India managers and others will have to be given justification why he/she should join his/her team as a finalist. The decision will be made based on the 2 minutes justification by the player.
  • Judges’ Score- Each qualifier would be marked by the aforementioned ranging from 1-5 based on which the qualifiers would receive their beginning stack. e.g a qualifier with score 1 will get 1k starting chip, those with score 2 will start on 2k in chip and so on.
  • Draft Day will take place on September 9, where all six team rosters will be announced. Following this, the Regular Season will begin.

The Regular season will have the 6 teams competing each other over 6-Max and Heads-up NLHE variants online on PokerStars India.

Weekly winners and top performers will be announced and a week-ending ‘best of three’ final will pick the week’s champion.

GPL Season 1: Finals

The surviving 4 teams will fight each other in a two-day finale in the October end. The four teams will compete in sequence. The final two teams will engage in a series of consecutive battles that will decide the Season 1 Champion.
