Jason Mercier had not attended this year’s PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which was  a clear indication that he has begun to prioritize something more than his passion for travelling to play poker- his family. Recently in a PokerStars blog, Mercier announced his decision of giving up of his position as a PokerStars team pro and also his habit of travelling to various landscapes to attend various poker tournaments and events.

He married his girlfriend, Natasha Barbour , who he had proposed to at the 2016 WSOP (he also won two bracelets in that tournament). Within two months of their marriage, Natasha conceived their child and on the 6th of October, 2017, junior Mercier (who they named Marco Henry Mercier) came into this world.

In Jason’s own words, “My life was changed forever that day, and for the better. Becoming a parent brings about a complete transformation of who you are. I no longer let myself be so concerned with what I want, but more so the well being of my wife and my child (and future children). Serving and leading my family is of utmost importance.”

The sense of being a father and his admittance to the fact that he, as a husband and a father, is responsible for the well being of his family, made him take a decision as such. He has evidently prioritized his family before his chances of winning the PCA title and his successful career as a poker player, atleast for the time-being.

But, Mercier is very clear that he isn’t retiring from the poker landscape- it is just like a paternal leave that he is taking to support the healthy and blossoming growth of his child. “Just to be clear, I’m not retiring from poker by any means. Not only will I be back at the PCA next year and look forward to playing the PokerStars Player Championship, I still plan to play all the big Florida series events, and as of now I plan to go to Las Vegas for the WSOP this summer. But my most important concern now, and my priority, is being a full time father and husband.”
