The Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 and anti-gambling bill in 2017 had brought the Australian poker community to a halt. However, off-late things have changed and for the better. The Stars Group took over the renowned Australian sports betting site, CrownBet for US$117.7 million on 27th February this year.

Amidst recent change of events, the acquisition can be seen as the silver lining in the Australian poker sky. Soon after the regulations not in favour of poker industry were brought into existence, major poker rooms like PokerStars and 888poker walked out of the Australian market.

About CrownBet

Founded in 2014, CrownBet is world’s second largest regulated sports betting market and Australia’s fastest growing online sportsbook. It offers exclusive sports betting for its users.

Poker is currently not on the scene. But, with The Stars Group involved, Aussies have all the reasons to be optimistic about the game in context.

From generating higher revenues through 2015 to 2017 to acquiring Australian Output for US$300, CrownBet has shown advancement across.

The Stars Group On The Deal

The Canadian gambling giant has partnered with the other shareholders of CrownBet, including the management team. Matthew Tripp will continue to lead the CrownBet team to operate the business in Australia.

This is what Stars Group CEO Rafi Ashkenazi had to say about the deal- “We are excited to enter the regulated Australian sportsbook market with CrownBet. CrownBet has become one of the fastest growing online sportsbooks in Australia through its strong management team, proprietary technology, mobile app, unique partnerships and market-leading loyalty program.”

The online gambling restrictions don’t seem to deter The Stars Group’s determination to push the envelope in the Australian market.

Overall, future of poker in Australian waters does not look as troubled as it was, post gambling regulations in the continent. However, Aussies will have to wait to find out if poker can return to their tables anytime soon.
