The 2017 World Series of Poker is indeed proving a year of comebacks. The latest to join the list is disgraced player and former Board Member of Full Tilt Poker, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson. Ferguson is currently leading the WSOP Player of the Year after recording his 14th cash of the series. In doing so, he has also set a new record, beating the one set last year by Roland Israelashvili (13 cashes).

Ferguson, with five WSOP bracelets to his name, has a highly controversial past to say the least. His history with the fiasco at Full Tilt following Black Friday still has many players seething. The anger dates back to 2011 when the U.S. Department of Justice shut down Full Tilt, accusing Ferguson and three other company directors of running a Ponzi scheme that paid out $444 million of players’ money to themselves and the firm’s owners. The matter was dropped when PokerStars bought Full Tilt and negotiated a plan to pay out the players.

Whereas certain others Board Members of Full Tilt have since come out and publicly apologized for their transgressions, Ferguson has refrained from doing so. Indeed Howard Lederer, a former Board Member and prominent poker pro, was widely praised for for his public apology.

Nicknamed ‘Jesus’, for his trademark long brown hair and beard, Ferguson made his controversial comeback to the WSOP in 2016 after a while out. He recorded an impressive 10 cashes last year and has followed that up with a record shattering 14 this time.

Legendary poker player Doyle Brunson took to twitter to support the maligned star and highlighted his past good deeds.

With a few more tourneys to go, Ferguson may yet extend his own record. However, 14 cashes do not translate into a huge windfall for Ferguson as 10 of his scores are below the $4,500 mark. His largest score of $150,929 came in the $10,000 PLO tournament.
