Five time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand is in full support of our beloved card game. He officially declared his support as he signed up as the brand ambassador of the Amit Burman and Adda52 promoted Poker Sports League (PSL).

Being the official brand ambassador, Anand will be promoting the league in full spirit and will also encourage and motivate people to give up on their taboo of considering poker as gambling.

Poker Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand

As per the founders of the Poker Sports league, the decision behind making Anand the brand ambassador of the league, and him agreeing to it, is a great move towards changing the boxed Indian mentality towards the game.

Anand does not (yet) have the complete knowhow of the game of poker himself. His definition of poker is ‘chess with a deck of cards’. Ironically he is referred to as the ‘poker-faced player’ in chess, many times. He also reveals about his desire of learning the game of poker, specifically Texas Hold’em having developed great interest toward the game after seeing his friends in the chess circuit play.

I have been following poker for a few years now. It is a game of skill and that’s perhaps why chess players take to poker naturally. It’s got me intrigued,” Anand told the Times of India.

What I have observed though is that poker and chess have some similarities in thinking process and being a chess player may actually influence your poker playing style,” he added.

Commenting on the development, PSL co-founder and Dabur Group promoter Amit Burman said, “Chess and poker are frequently compared as both games are based on strategic thinking and decision making. Both games also involve reading the other player at the table.

The second edition of the professional poker league PSL will be involving 12 Indian cities and each city will be represented by their own team. The teams will compete against each other for a prize money of 3.60 crores. According to the organisers, the finale of the Season 2 of PSL will be held in the second half of 2018.
