2018 EPT Barcelona Main Event Champion: Piotr Nurzynski

Another coveted poker tournament comes to an end as the Online qualifier from Poland, Piotr Nurzynski takes down the 2018 EPT Barcelona Main Event. The Main Event has broken records with its humongous number of entrants, precisely 1,931. In addition to the appreciation and the coveted trophy, Nurzynski also bagged mammoth prize money of €1,037,109.

Nurzynski had joined the run after he qualified through a €250 satellite on PokerStars. His firm and strategic footsteps and excellent poker skills have helped Nurzynski achieve this huge honour. This is indeed a benchmark in the poker career of this doctor and part-time poker player. Previous to this, Nurzynski has had very little in live earnings, $11,812 to be accurate. Thus, this win is like a boost for his upcoming poker journey.

Out of the 6 Indian attendees at the event, only one survived up to Day 3. On Day 3, Kunal Punjwani exited in the 176th place right after Daniel Negreanu‘s elimination.

When the final table reduced to just four players, the players cut a deal, leaving the Platinum Pass, €180,000 in cash and the trophy up for grabs. Since Nurzynski was the only player left who joined the run through an online satellite, he had already locked up his seat to the PokerStars Players NLHE Championship (PSPC), Bahamas but at the end, he claimed the same in style.

Final Table Recap

On Day 5, the final table started with 8 players. The elimination started in the following order starting with Patrick Clarke followed by Mark Buckley, Pedro Marques, Rodrigo Carmo, Matthias Tikerpe and  Ognyan Dimov. After Dimov’s elimination, it was the time for the much-awaited heads-up – Haoxiang Wang VS Nurzynski. Nurzynski called from the button with card 3card 3 and Wang checked his odds from the big blind with card 3card 2. Both players hit a pair on the card 2card 3card 2. Just prior to the river round, Nurzynski bluffed Wang into calling his bet with 2 Million. With optimism, Wang took this risk, only to realise at the showdown that he was long defeated with card 2. Wang had to settle as the first runner-up, albeit with €1,023,701 in prize money and a Platinum Pass worth $30,000.

“I can’t believe it! It struck me. Wow. I ran really really well. I made two huge mistakes today and I was thinking I can’t win it. But it’s amazing. It’s hard to say something now,” an ecstatic Nurzynski exclaimed, after his victory. He is the fourth player from Poland to win the EPT Main Event.”

“What can I say, it is a great feeling. I have been watching EPT series for so many hours. It was my dream to end on the final table, but wow, it’s shocking,” Nurzynski said. “Yeah of course I am excited,” he added, talking about the PSPC Bahamas.
